Question about Meiosis?

I am pretty confused. Okay, so a diploid cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes. A haploid cell has 23 chromosomes. Meisois starts with a diploid cell and at the end of telophase 1 as two haploid cells. I do not understand this. One chromosome is four chromatids, correct? I just do not understand how at the end of telophase one when there appear to be only two chromosomes in each cell (8 chromatids) that the cells could each be haploid, becuase I thought that requires 23 chromosomes???
